Officers & Board
President: Sharon Sloane. Sharon is a Travel Consultant that helps with all types of leisure travel such as cruises, customized trips, and group tours. Sharon enjoys travelling, hiking, and spending time in the mountains. Sharon is a past Denver Jewish Chamber president and has been elected to serve as president for the 2016-2018 term.
Vice President: Jonathan Defez. Jonathan is the chair of the Membership Committee for the Denver Jewish Chamber. His goals are to expand the chamber’s membership base by attracting new members and working hard to retain current members. Professionally, he works for Optimum Networking, an IT Managed Service Provider that supports his clients’ computers, servers and networks. Personally, his life is dedicated to serving G-d, his family and his community.
Treasurer: Joshua Berman. Joshua joined Garden Financial in 2015 as a tax accountant, bookkeeper and financial advisor. He previously worked for several CPA and other tax accounting firms. In addition he began to perform bookkeeping for business clients as well as offer financial services products to his clients. In his free time Joshua enjoys spending time with his wife enjoying the beautiful weather Colorado has to offer. He likes to ride his mountain bike during the summer and ski during the winter. He enjoys many sports and bowls in a weekly league.
Past President: Carolin Topelson. Carolin is a civil litigation attorney focusing on real estate and business related matters. Carolin owns her own practice Carolin Topelson Law, LLC, which provides cost effective representation. Carolin speaks Spanish and French and in her free time likes to ski, be with family, watch funny movies and go to the live theater. Carolin is honored to be serving as the 2014-2015 president of DJCC and will work hard to grow DJCC
Josh Beram: Josh has been in the telecommunications industry since he was 4 years old, when his parents started KCG Communications in 1980. Growing up working in the business, he learned the industry from various perspectives. He started out assisting in the office and warehouse, then, at 15 he started pulling cable and learned programming of telephone systems. His dream was to someday take over the family business, so he attended Fort Lewis College and earned his degree in finance. After college he returned to work full time in several positions learning the business from the ground up. He held positions as technician, dispatching, training, sales and finally in a management position. Josh took over as President and owner of KCG Communications in 2006.
Philip Bluestein: Phil is the founding Attorney with the Bluestein Law Firm. His law firm helps doctors and other health care professionals throughout Colorado with all the legal and business issues that arise in their practices and careers. In his free time, Phil enjoys spending time with his family as well as skiing, cycling, hiking and camping. Phil grew up in a family that was very active in the Jewish community in several cities around the country and is honored to continue this involvement with his position on the DJCC Board.
Edward “Ed” Boyle: Ed is the CEO and Employing Broker for Katchen Company, a boutique real estate firm offering personalized real estate solutions to both residential and commercial consumers. Ed, in his free time, likes to ride his bicycle, hike and scuba dive. He is an intrepid traveler who photographs his experiences and shares them with the world. Ed is pleased to be selected to serve on the board and help the DJCC achieve its mission.
Kathy Knaus is Owner and Director of Sales and Marketing for Minuteman Press-DTC. Previously, Kathy taught Special Education in the Denver area. She and her husband Fred have three grown daughters and two grandsons. Kathy enjoys hiking, skiing, and traveling.
Lawrence Kopf, MBA, LAH, CPA is a Speaker, Author, & Consultant of Tax, Finance, & Insurance Planning, and helps Businesses to achieve their goals. He prepares income tax returns & provides consulting to accountants & attorneys across the nation.
Jonathan Miller has applied his marketing and communications skills to several entrepreneurial endeavors. He created the professional high school reunion planning market space and since 1989, Reunited has planned in excess of 1,200 reunions for high school classes from coast to coast. Besides Reunited, Miller also operates PlayNStay, a housing consolidator for large national sporting events. An avid cyclist, Miller and his wife Beth are annual participants in the Israel Ride, a 300-mile fundraising bicycling event from Jerusalem through the Negev Desert to Eilat.
Seth Peritzman: (Past President) Seth is a financial consultant with First Allied Securities, an independently owned, full service firm whose brokers are independent representatives. Seth joined the company in 2000 as a Senior Investment Advisor and has been in the financial industry for over 20 years. His responsibilities at First Allied Securities include asset allocation decisions for clients’ portfolios and structuring overall financial plans. Additionally, Seth provides both equity and fixed income, and insurance advice, serves high-net worth individuals and manages retirement plans. Seth’s independence allows him to offer you an unbiased objective approach to serving your investment needs.
Mark Spitz moved to Denver in 2010 and has his own law practice, focusing on business and corporate law. He enjoys working with startup companies and small to mid-sized businesses to help them become grow and become successful. An Ohio native, he enjoys reading history and science fiction, hiking, and is trying to get back to playing piano. Mark and his wife Mona have two grown children, a daughter who also lives here in Denver and is a special education teacher, and a son who is starting graduate school in Baltimore this fall.
Joel Weissman is a retired Denver Public Schools teacher and currently a landlord. He owns and manages eight rentals. Joel is actively involved with a number of organizations in the Jewish community including serving on the board of Bnai Brith, advisor to BBYO chapter 1387, and sings with the Shir Ami singers. He often serves as an usher at Temple Emanuel. In the community Joel serves as area governor in Toastmasters and is on the board of Denver Classroom Teachers Association. Joel is once again employed as a substitute teacher for the Cherry Creek School District for the upcoming 2016-17 school year.
